About Dr. N Sahoo

Dr Nilachala Sahoo was an international figure in the field of refractory and Ceramics. He had dedicated his whole life for research and development on refractory, ceramics, and allied materials. He worked for the development of ceramic radomes for missile Trishul, Prithvi and Nag with Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, who was at that time (1985-1988) the Director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad. Dr Sahoo was The Head of technology and R& D in the refractory division of M/S OCL India Ltd, Rajgangpur, Odisha. He was the Director of Dalmia Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (DISIR) from June 2011- July2016. During that time The Honourable Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam visited DISIR. Dr N Sahoo has developed 45 refractory products and processes which have been commercialised and out of which 27 have been patented.

To his credit Dr Sahoo received Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 by Indian Refractory Maker’s Association for the development and Application of Refractories, Refractory Technologist of the year-2012 Award by Indian Ceramic Society. He was awarded Scientist Satyendra Nath Bose Memorial Honour Award in International Honour Award Ceremony in 2019 at Port Blair. He received three times Import Substitution Award in All India Industrial Exhibition held at Hyderabad in the year 1887,1992 and 1999. Not only that he has published more than 135 technical articles in the journals of National and International repute. He has guided four young scientists for the award of Ph.D. degree. Further he was the inspiration for innovation for both school and college students. He availed the scope to visit U.K, Japan, U.S.A, Russia, Germany, China, Indonesia, and a number of countries to upgrade R & D projects and attend seminars/ conferences.
